Simon P. Walters 1926-2004
Delaware/Portage, IN Capt. Simon P. Walters, age 78, passed away Wednesday, September 29, 2004.  He was born January 12, 1926 in Garyton, Indiana, the son of George W. and Eva Walters.  A Rehoboth Beach, Delaware resident for two years, formerly of Portage, Indiana.  He was married to Eileen Schiess in 1945, and she preceded him in death in 1975.  He married Mary "Jennie" Moriarty in 1975.  He was the first paid firefighter for Portage under the first fire chief, Joseph Erdelec and retired at the rank of Captain in 1984.  He worked for many years at the Street Department and retired from the city on September 5, 1986.  On August 6, 1992, the Portage Fire Department named a new fire truck in his honor.  He is survived by his loving family: his wife Jennie of Rehoboth, Deleware, and his eight children who lovingly called him Dad are: Bob (Ruth) Walters of Valparaiso, Ray (Regina) Walters of Hobart, Kathy (Charlie) Heckman of Portage, Linda Kozlowski of Schererville, Maureen Walters of Valparaiso, Peggie Sams of South Haven, Beth (Tony) Ramsey of Portage and Lis (John) Edmonds of Delaware; 34 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Alice Felty of Lebanon and Elsie (Bob) Barrett of California; his five other children who affectionately called him Papa are Joe (Patty) Pedone of Arkansas and Mary (Rick) Garner of Delaware; nieces and nephews, many other family members and loving friends.  He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Eileen Walters, two brothers, Frank and George Walters, and four sisters, Elizabeth Stevens, Anne Marshall, Christina Cipko and Susan Wilson.  A visitation will be held Sunday, October 3, 2004 from 2:00 to 8:00 P.M. at Engel Funeral Home.  A funeral service will be held on Monday at 10:00 A.M. at Engel Funeral Home, 2700 Willowcreek Road, Portage, IN 46368, with Father Sammie Maletta officiating.  Internment in Calvary Cemetary, Portage.  For info: 219-762-8595.
